After watching Dynamite last night ( 23 Oct ) I cannot see how they fall any further. Well, I guess I can, but you know what I mean.
Never underestimate how badly Tony Khan can book. He will make a fool out of you every time.
1. Mark Briscoe had the potential to be one of the top babyfaces in the company, the fans LOVE him. He's got a unique look, he's a good worker and he's actually over. And he gets put in there with and loses to the black hole of annoying garbage, Jericho. It's like he (TK) knows no one wants to see it and he puts it on TV out of pure spite & hubris. Or worse, Jericho has his ear and has convinced him it's a good idea.
I agree on all fronts and the worst part is, it was for the ROH Title which means next to nothing in 2024. It was disheartening, for sure.
2. After the Bucks took the loss in the 6 man, was it just me, or did Private Party just sound like high school kids on the mic? If it was just me, fine, but it sounded terrible to my ears.
It certainly wasn’t The Motor City Machine Guns vs. Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa from a storyline perspective, that’s for sure.
SummerSlam in NJ - do you think as it’s not their primary big event that the pricing would be lower than what’s been seen for Vegas? Or is this possibly tying into like a “supply and demand” situation where if they sell Mania out or come close, the “Big 4” shows go up significantly too? Or if Mania sales lag, do they recognize and pivot? I went to Mania in Tampa only because nobody knew what to expect coming out from the pandemic and it was fairly inexpensive at the time. Even a one night ticket now seems to be out of reach for some.
I would guess that WWE will not charge as much for SummerSlam as they do for WrestleMania, but I can’t say for sure. What I am sure of is that Ticketmaster will once again use dynamic pricing to get as much money as they can from the people buying the tickets.
So, everybody's got a theory as to why AEW has dropped off so much this year, from the booking to...well...the booking, but maybe the talent is part of the problem? During most of this downturn, Swerve was the top men's champ and Toni Storm the top women's champ, and while the diehards went gaga over them, it's hard to argue with the numbers. Lots of regular fans looked at Swerve as champ and wondered, "why not any of the proven main eventers Tony's been stockpiling?" And while "Timeless" Tony Storm is a gimmick that the diehards love, it is a delusional comedy gimmick, and those tend to have short shelf lives. What's more, moving on from them hasn't helped ratings or attendance, so the damage has already been done. So, was this a mistake? Would AEW be in better shape if Ospreay/Okada and Mercedes had been top champs in 2024?
Honestly? Given how Tony booked those three, probably not. Remember their hyped debut earlier this year. It didn’t do anything good for the ratings. Personally, I don’t blame Swerve or Toni. I blame Tony Khan because he doesn’t know how to book and it makes it easy for people to skip the shows because all it really is now most of the time is wrestling matches for the sake of wrestling matches. If you skip a week it’s not like miss out on any good story telling, you just won’t see pretty much the same matches that you saw last week and will see next week. It’s an easy show to miss.
Now that Samantha Irvin has left WWE, how long before she shows up in AEW?
My guess is that as soon as she is contractually able, she will be there but that is just a guess. To me, that would be a backward move but I am not her. Whatever she is looking for, I hope that she finds it.
