Between NXT, the Performance Center and now WWE ID, is it safe to say the future of wrestling runs through WWE? At this point they’ve developed an entire minor league system, it’s going to be pretty difficult for someone to wind up in Japan, AEW or TNA unless WWE just doesn’t want them, right?
Clearly WWE can pick the indy talent that they want, try and sign them and then send them to a preferred territory now, no doubt. With that said, I don’t think it will keep new talents from emerging. I believe that will still happen but probably not as prevalently as it does now.
Hi, I know you were a long-time ECW fan so I'm curious about your stance on this. I see Uncle Dave and AEW fans discounting NXT's win over AEW, saying it was simply ECW nostalgia. This doesn't sit well with me for a number of reasons, and I'm curious what you think about them.
1) ECW died 23 years ago, almost 24. Nostalgia will be there, but it isn't exactly One Night Stand
I agree with you. The 25 year olds who watched ECW then are pushing 50 now.
2) The show's best numbers, if I saw correctly, were the opening and closing matches. Which, by the way, happened to be women's wrestling, something Tony doesn't feel draws and only had 4 minutes of on his show. That doesn't feel nostalgia driven.
Dynamite actually won the first quarter hour and then it went downhill from there. He had the chance to keep viewers. He blew it.
3) How are we going to ignore NXT being on a different night and destroying the competition?
We aren’t. The shills will, but we aren’t. Losing on their own night was embarrassing for AEW and if Tony really wanted to improve his product, he would address the issues that caused him to lose. I hope he does but I don’t expect that he will. To paraphrase what happened with the US election last week, “It’s the booking stupid”.
4) Lastly, how can Dave talk about ECW nostalgia when AEW's biggest draw right now is a 5 year old stable of 50 year olds?
Well, they aren’t all fifty but your point is well taken. Dave feels the need to make excuses for AEW. He is what he is, and what he is….it’s embarrassing.
