How SoftOrbits’ mission to simplify digital media editing has driven its success for 19 years

SoftOrbits was founded by Eugene Ustinenkov in 2006 as an image editing software development company focused on helping amateur and professional photographers deal with their daily hassles and enjoy art with no needless obstacles. Starting as a small startup, SoftOrbits eventually became one of the leading niche companies, with over a million yearly downloads and 300,000 users relying on its utilities in their work.

Not only that, SoftOrbits earned recognition from some of the leading brands in the industry, including CNET, Softonic, and OISV.

“We are very glad that our team witnessed the way the industry transformed. When we started out, digital cameras were rather novel (and expensive) and the quality they offered was subpar. Over 19 years we went from basically analog to cloud. Image editing turned from pixel hunting with slow and clunky tools to automated AI solutions. We’re excited to be a part of what’s coming next,” says Eugene Ustinenkov, CEO of SoftOrbits, Candidate of Technical Sciences.

How SoftOrbits earned its niche in one of the most competitive industries

Ever since its inception, SoftOrbits has established several key principles that have enabled it to provide great service to its customers for years.

First of all, the team decided that there was an abundance of multi-feature tools on the market, and competing in that area wasn’t going to be a successful strategy. However, as it often happens, jacks of all trades are masters of none — so SoftOrbits chose a different approach to cover the blank spots in the industry. The team chose to develop single feature-focused utilities that would outperform larger-scale solutions or provide unique opportunities — like Picture Doctor and Flash Drive Recovery.

“Knowing the market and your competition is key if you ever intend to succeed as a business owner. We knew our strengths and our weaknesses: a small but highly experienced development team can achieve a lot as long as it has a good idea in mind, and that is exactly what we had right from the start,” says Eugene Ustinenkov, CEO of SoftOrbits and AlarmFront.

Secondly, the team chose to focus on eliminating any hassles associated with image editing, paying attention mostly to time-consuming and boring parts of the process. This is how Batch Picture Protector and Batch Picture Resizer came into existence.

“We believe that photo editing can be a fun process on its own, but some parts of it are genuinely unbearable — especially if you’re looking to make some of your amateur photographs look better, and aren’t earning money by professional photography. We made sure that our software saves as much time as humanly possible, and it’s this exact quality of batch processing tools that drew attention to them and ultimately became the reason for their popularity,” says Eugene Ustinenkov, CEO of SoftOrbits with more than 10 years of software development expertise.

Finally, the team’s third principle is about staying ahead of the curve and implementing new technologies as soon as they are ready to significantly improve the user experience.

“Last year we implemented AI functionalities in seven of our solutions, and we intend to find other uses for the technology as well. If you aim to build convenient utilities, nothing beats natural language processing and automated editing, so we kept our eye on AI advancements ever since the first neural networks appeared. However, we had to take our time to ensure the technology is ready — you can see how the industry is flooded with weak AI solutions, and we didn’t want to be part of it,” says Eugene Ustinenkov.

SaaS as the next step of SoftOrbits’ evolution

While SoftOrbits currently provides downloadable utilities, the team behind it is already experimenting with the SaaS distribution model, which is currently available for corporate clients. \

“We have considered turning to the SaaS model for a long time, and now we are finally making confident steps towards it. After all, what can be more convenient than a tool available at all times on all devices, with no hardware requirements whatsoever? While the transition process might take a while, we’re very excited about this change,” says Hannes Jansen, writer and editor at SoftOrbits.
