Why online dating has become very popular in recent years

By Kendall Jenkins on 2025-03-18 06:18:00

Online dating has evolved over the last few years to become a booming industry, transforming how people meet partners. According to a study by Pew Research in 2022, at least three in ten US adults have ever used a dating site or app. The study went on to say that at least one in five partnered adults under the age of 30 said that they met their current spouse through online dating.

But why has this become very popular in the third decade of the 21st century? Why are more people joining Flirtbees and similar platforms to chat with strangers over video calls? Well, it’s not like anybody is saying that it is wrong, but we just want to get to understand why more and more people are opting for online dating than physical meetings.

Convenience and accessibility

One of the biggest reasons why online dating has gained much popularity is the fact that you can find a date here easily. You see, conventionally, you have to go out to social events, say church meetings, conventions, sports events, etc. for you to have a chance at meeting someone. However, today, people are busier than ever before. They just don’t have the time to socialize long enough to know whether they are compatible with someone.

However, when it comes to online dating, accessibility is the order of the day. As long as you have your phone, it is a chance to meet new people. People can easily chat and connect whenever they have free time, say during work breaks or even when they are on the bus moving from one place to another.

Also, online dating relieves the pressure of immediate interaction. Let’s face it. People are not as bold and chatty around new people as they would want to be. Traditional dating often requires you to have face-to-face interactions immediately, which becomes a huge deal for socially awkward individuals. However, with internet dating, you are able to gradually build comfort with someone so that when you finally meet, you have more confidence being around them.

Wide pool of matches

You see, traditional dating confines you to particular pools of people. You can only interact with people from your workplace, friend circles or local social events. Unless the nature of your job or personality allows you to engage with people from different places, your pool for potential partners is limited. The biggest problem with this is that you might not have people that you might want to know more about in those pools.

You see, in today’s world, people are following a certain trajectory about falling in love. According to sociologist Dr Marie Bergström, people are working with the narrative that there is someone out there for you. You have to be proactive to find love, not just sit and wait and bump into love. The good thing about this trajectory is that you know as long as you look hard enough, you will find what you are looking for. That’s where online dating comes in!

Online dating opens you up to wider boundaries of thousands, if not millions, of potential matches. Here, you have people from different cities, cultures, professions and all that you couldn’t have found within your social circle. Also, you are able to filter by preference. This can be according to:

  • Age
  • Location
  • Interests
  • Personality traits
  • Culture
  • Profession

Now, unlike traditional dating, where you take a long time to find someone else when one person rejects you, here, if you are rejected, you just swipe to the next compatible match. Interestingly, a recent study has shown that about 42% of Americans say that online dating has helped them find long-term partners more easily.

Dating is getting more private

As we mentioned before, traditional dating requires you to find a potential partner from a common pool of people. However, many people prefer that their relationships be more private, especially before marriage. Take an example of Lucie, a 22 year old student who was being interviewed for Dr Marie Bergström’s book. Lucie says that there are so many people that she could match with around her, but when she sees the many number of mutual acquitances they have, she is immediately deterred.

Let’s just say it plainly: there are many prying eyes whenever you are in a relationship with someone. People are always talking, and whatever happens between you two might not remain between you two for very long. However, with online dating, you are able to keep things more private. By the time people find out, your relationship is already solid, and there are fewer chances of negative talk. Well, Lucie also says that she doesn’t think that it’s healthy for people to have so many common friends, especially at the relationship level.

As we wrap up, it is quite clear that people who are turning to online dating have some pretty solid reasons to do what they are doing. With this new form of interaction being more accessible and convenient, people are able to interact with potential partners from all over the world whenever they are free. The good thing is that dating apps and websites offer services like video chats, which makes it even better. Again, if you want to be private, online dating has provided the perfect opportunity, far from prying eyes.
