Goldin Auctions are currently holding an auction for a signed Andre the Giant contract from 1983. The Auction notes:
This Texas Department of Labor and Standards Boxing or Wrestling contract signed twice by Andre the Giant gives a glimpse into the legend's career before he helped usher in the Golden Age of Professional Wrestling with the WWF (now WWE) during the 1980s.
The contract, for a heavyweight match against Kamala (James Harris), for Best of Texas Wrestling in Houston. Andre placed two delightfully careful signatures on the document that is stapeled and lightly toned., Accompaying the document is a Best of Texas Wrestling program dated Jan. 14, 1983, featuring Andre and Kamala on the cover. The program contains stains and wear to the edges and corners. The charisma of the incomparable André (who was born André René Roussimoff in 1946) is at least partially responsible for the overwhelming success of pro wrestling from the late-20th Century onward. A tipping point for the phenomenon can perhaps be identified as the Wrestlemania III event—which took place on March 29, 1987 at the Pontiac Silverdome with an attendance figure of over 93,000 fans on hand to witness the contest. (That total marked the largest recorded attendance at an indoor event in North America, a record that stood until 1999.) The document and program offer a thrilling glimpse into Andre the Giant's early career, accompanied by an LOA from Beckett for the signatures.
