PUNK? CENA? DREW? ROMAN? TIME TO SEE WHO HEADLINES WRESTLEMANIA, A TRUE LADDER WAR, TAG TITLE THROWBACK, A GREAT WOMEN'S RUMBLE: MIKE'S WWE ROYAL RUMBLE BLOG

By Mike Johnson on 2025-02-01 18:02:00

Welcome to my live, ongoing WWE Royal Rumble 2025 blog!

I want to first thank everyone who signed up for the Elite section today as well as all our long-time subscribers.  We had a LOT of news and I very appreciative as we come out of celebrating our 21st anniversary (!) how lucky and blessed we are, so THANK YOU.

I've always loved the Royal Rumble and can still fondly remember watching the 1988 Rumble on the USA Network, won by Hacksaw Duggan and then 1989 won by the great Big John Studd.  The Rumble matches, when they work, are probably the ultimate intersection of theater and athletics, so let's hope they can happen tonight.

We officially opened with Stephanie McMahon coming out and thanking the fans for making this the biggest Rumble in history.  It's nice to see her back in the mix.  Lots of pyro!

We are opening up with the Women's Rumble, as we reported earlier today in the Elite section.  Here we go!

Our first two competitors are IYO SKY and Liv Morgan.  Pretty surprised to see Morgan in so early, so we'll see if she's going to have a marathon run.  Some nice action early on with SKY hitting some flash moves.

The WWE 2K25 crawl at the bottom makes me feel like I'm watching a news channel on cable and is absolutely distracting.

#3 was Roxxane Perez from NXT.  We had reported yesterday in the Elite section she was among the NXT talents brought in.  She looked great with the pink additions to her look.  She was beyond crisp in the ring.  She was almost tossed but pulled herself back in.

#4 was Intercontinental Champion Lyra Valkyria.  She had an issue with her gear after hitting a fisherman's buster.  Everyone battled.

#5 was Chelsea Green.  Green, as always, gets the most out of her moment and entrance.  Green tossed everyone over and pointed at the Mania sign but didn't realize everyone landed on the apron, so they weren't eliminated, recovered and all attacked her.  That was great.

#6 is B-Fab.  She hit a spinkick on Perez in the corner and then slammed Green on top of her.  IYO and B-Fab battled and everyone went to war.

#7 is Ivy Nile, the queen of the Titan Games.  She muscled Lyra over but Lyra escaped,  Nile did an old Taz spot, suplexing Perez and Green at the same time.

#8 is Zoey Stark.  Green was almost eliminated by Liv and that was a fun exchange.

#9 is NXT's Lash Legend, who we reported was in town.  She cleaned house on everyone in the ring.  She used Ivy as a weapon, smashing into everyone else.  She powerbombed Nile and then battled with B-Fab.  Green tossed B-Fab out.  Indy chanted for Green.

#10 is Bianca Belair.  She worked over IYO and Nile in the corner.  She got a big spotlight here, piling up on everyone in the corner.   She suplexed over Lash.  She tried to toss IYO.

#11 is Shayna Baszler.  Everyone battled.  Stark slipped on a springboard but caught it and nailed Lyra.  Lyra was tossed by Nile, which was a bit of a shock.

#12 was Bayley.  She and IYO were about to face off but they were jumped by Shayna and Zoey.

#13 was Sonya Deville.  Deville looked like she had a chip on her shoulder in the ring.  She nailed The Advocate on Chelsea.

#14 was Maxinne Dupri.  She had some entertaining shenanigans and Nile was tossed.  Shayna and Zoey flipped Dupri over the top.  It was fun while it lasted.

#15 was Naomi.  Big reaction for her and they put a spotlight on her before Shayna and Zoey attacked.  Everyone battled.  Naomi and Bianca double-teamed Zoey.  They then tossed her.  Sonya was tossed.

#16 was Jaida Parker.  We noted she was in town in the Elite section as well.  Big opportunity for her.  Chelsea ended up being pinballed between Parker, Lash, Bianca and Naomi.  Lash got tossed by Green.  The crowd chanted for Green again.  Lash had a strong performance for the time she was.

#17 was Piper Niven.  She was beating down everyone but then knocked Green off the apron and eliminated her by accident.  Green was pitch perfect in everything she did here.

#18 was Natalya.   She was whipping out suplexes like crazy.

#19 was Jordynne Grace.  WAIT, I THOUGHT SHE WAS GOING TO SEE HER MOTHER?  Happy Birthday Mama Grace!  We had reported in Elite Grace would debut here but she denied it.  Hey, you can't get mad at the magicians for trying to protect their magic tricks.  Grace showcased her power, even on Piper and started tossing people.  She and former TNA partner Naomi embraced.  Bianca did not like that and tossed her ovder the top, but Grace saved herself.  Grace looks really good.

#20 was  Michin.  More chaos.

#21 is the returning Alexa Bliss, who we broke at 4:17 this afternoon in the Elite section was backstage and would be appearing.  She got a monster pop.  She looked good in the ring.

#22 was Zelina Vega.  She nailed a nice Code Red off the ropes.  Everyone battled.

#23 was Candice LaRae.

#24 was Stephanie Vaquer, who we reported was in town for the show.

#25 was WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus.  Her 25th anniversary and she's #25, get it?   She nailed Natalya with a Thesz Press.  Grace and Stratus battled.  Great, fun stuff.  The crowd chanted This is Awesome.  Piper took out Trish.

#26 was Raquel Rodriguez. She tossed Natalya  Liv took out Alexa, which the crowd HATED.  Lots of heat for Liv.

#27 was the returning Charlotte Flair.  My man Terrelder is happy as hell right now.  Flair had this awesome red robe and they gave her a ton of pyro, which all but predicts she's winning this thing!  She milked the entrance for all it was worth and began whipping out chops.  Everyone in Indy was Wooing like crazy.  She kicked Michin to the floor and eliminated her.  After a Flair flop in the corner, she nailed a bodypress off the ropes.  Flair looked great in the ring. She tossed Piper out to a big pop.

#28 was NXT Women's Champion GIULIA.  This would be her Rumble debut.  She and SKY battled, which was a fun exchange.  She tried to German suplex Grace off the apron and then took her out.  Great first appearance for Grace.  GIULIA and Vaquer faced off.  The crowd chanted for NXT.  Cool moment.  It broke down into NXT vs. WWE main roster.  That's great,

#29 was Nia Jax.  I think a lot of people are about to get tossed.  She knocked Trish out.  The crowd booed that.

#30 was Nikki Bella, who we reported was in town earlier this weekend.  So they are saving Becky's return for another day after all.  Bella didn't get a big bigger than Alexa or Charlotte.  Bella faced off with Nia and everyone agreed.  They went after her the way they used to go after Andre the Giant back in the day.   Jax blasted through all nine of them.  Bella and Perez faced off.  Nikki tossed her over the top but Roxanne held on.

IYO and GIULIA both went over the top but were holding on from hitting the floor as Perez kicked at then.More women battled on the apron.  Nia wiped them all out, taking out six at once, then took out Liv as well.  Liv did well over 60 minutes and was great here.

GIULIA and Perez battled on the apron.  Flair went for a big boot but missed them.  They pulled her over the top but Perez helped take out and eliminate GIULIA.

They were down to Jax, Charlotte and Perez.  Perez being in so late is AWESOME.  Shows how highly they covet her work.  They all battled.  Jax was taken out by Flair as he was trying to take out Roxanne.

Perez and Flair battled.  Perez was kicked off to the floor.  She had a GREAT showing.

Flair wins.  As we reported in the Elite section earlier, she is earmarked for a major push leading into Wrestlemania 41!

I thought this was a good Rumble with a lot of fun interactions.  Perez and Morgan had great long runs.  Trish, Alexa and Nikki all had nice returns and Flair looked like she hasn't missed a beat.  Jax was GREAT as the marauding monster as well.  Very entertaining!
